Sometimes, we go through difficult phases in life when things don’t seem to work out, and people around us only criticize or talk negatively about us. This constant negativity starts affecting us even more, making us feel like salt is being rubbed on a wound. I’ve faced such situations in the past, and I want to share something I learned during those tough times.
When you’re going through a bad time, try this exercise:
Every day, create a list of all the good qualities you have — things that make you unique or things you’re proud of. Write down qualities that others might not have, such as:
- True friendships: Not everyone has genuine friends, but if you do, cherish them. Write down the names of friends who truly understand and support you.
- Supportive parents or family: If your family stands by you, recognize that as a blessing.
- Caring behaviour: If someone has ever complimented you on your caring nature, write it down.
Most importantly, remind yourself that no time is permanent. Bad times may feel never-ending, but they always pass. Read books, and listen to people’s stories — you’ll find that even those who faced the worst situations eventually found a way out.
Take comfort in the fact that challenges shape us into stronger versions of ourselves. The key is to focus on your strengths, believe in yourself, and have faith that this too shall pass.
